Activist Workshop in Web 2.0

Using GIS and Other Technologies to Grow Student Activism

I am a social studies teacher at a small public college prep high school in Chicago IL — We are NOT a selective enrollment school so most of our students might be labeled “at risk”. We prefer to focus on the positives, especially their interest in college, since for many students they will be the first person in their family to go to college.

Our goal at the Al Raby School for Community and Environment is to graduate citizens who are prepared to tackle social justice and environmental issues. In other words education not to escape “the hood” but education to improve their community.

I am in the process of designing a class for juniors that I hope will combine the best elements of GIS/GPS, sociology, writing workshop and Web 2.0 tools.  This blog is for my planning, my reflection, and hopefully for feedback as I build the class.
